My personal journey is still an ongoing one, but the importance for me of going from a wheelchair to upright and walking is immense. Personal independence is crucial to me for my own wellbeing and the ability to drive myself to any location I wanted to was very high on my list of priorities. I also want to walk safely wearing my above knee prosthetic leg unaided without any walking aids, this is an ongoing mission for me.
There are so many physical obstacles in our environment that makes this goal challenging and I hope in my photographs I have captured a snapshot of what these are. Uneven surfaces, steps and slopes and wet and slippery surfaces make walking a fearful activity at times.
Having a car and the ability to drive does make life much easier for me and affords me great freedom, and there is continuous joy when I walk somewhere new or manage a difference surface successfully, without falling or needing helped or assisted by another person.
There is beauty in the World around us and I’m so excited to have the use of a prosthetic leg and the health that is allowing me to explore this beauty and capture it in that moment in a photograph.
